Whether you’re downsizing, managing a loved one’s estate, or clearing out a home after a major life change, the idea of an estate sale can feel overwhelming. If you’ve never gone through the process, it’s hard to know what to expect—or where to start. At Blue Moon Estate Sales, we make it easy by offering professional, compassionate, and highly organized estate sales throughout the Twin Cities and Western Wisconsin.

Here’s a look at what really happens behind the scenes, from the first phone call to the final checkout slip.

Step 1: The Free Consultation

Every Blue Moon estate sale begins with a free, no-obligation consultation. During this meeting, we walk through the property, evaluate the contents, and determine if an estate sale is the right fit.

For a full-service estate sale to be worthwhile for both the client and the company, the total value of the saleable items generally needs to exceed $10,000. This ensures there’s enough volume and value to attract buyers, cover labor and marketing costs, and generate a strong return for the family.

Step 2: Contracts & Preparation

Once we decide to move forward, a contract is signed to lock in the dates and expectations. One important rule we always emphasize: all items in the house at the time of signing must remain for sale. That’s why we recommend clients invite family and close friends to review and remove sentimental or personal items before the contract is finalized.

This helps us ensure transparency, pricing accuracy, and inventory integrity—while avoiding confusion or conflicts later.

Step 3: Sale Week Setup

The real magic begins the week of the sale. Our team arrives on Monday and immediately gets to work. We:

  • Sort and organize every room in the house
  • Price hundreds (if not thousands) of items using expert tools like Google Lens and Ebay, as well as AI-assisted pricing and years of industry knowledge
  • Face the house—just like retail stores do—so every valuable item is front and center for maximum visibility.

With the average home containing more than 300,000 individual items, this is no small task. From every t-shirt and fork to antique tools and collectibles, we work meticulously to ensure accurate pricing and presentation.

Step 4: Day of the Sale

Most sales kick off on Friday morning, but our customers often show up long before that. In fact, it’s common to see people lined up 2+ hours early, especially if we’ve advertised items of special value.

We begin handing out tickets one hour before the doors open, ensuring an organized and fair entry process. Our team arrives early to finalize details and manage parking and entry flow.

Once the doors open, we’re in full swing:

  • Staff help customers locate specific items
  • Experts offer insight on pieces of interest
  • Cashiers and helpers manage hold bins, negotiations, and checkouts
  • Team members assist with **loading large items** and answering product questions

There’s a lot happening at once—but every part of the operation is structured for customer ease and seller success.

Step 5: Saturday – Half-Price Day

Saturday is typically half-off day, a customer favorite. The same procedures apply, but the pricing works a bit differently:

At checkout, we still write up the item’s full price on the sales slip, and then our register system automatically applies a 50% discount. This avoids re-stickering the house and keeps our records accurate, though it does sometimes confuse new shoppers. (Don’t worry—we explain it as they check out!)

Step 6: Closing the Sale

After the sale ends Saturday afternoon, we remove all of Blue Moon’s materials and equipment. What happens next is up to the client.

Many choose to work with Hauling It Away to clean out the remaining items. Some even earn additional money by consigning leftover pieces through Garage Sale Titans, a service operated in coordination with Hauling It Away. This gives unsold items a second chance at life—and gives our clients one less thing to worry about.

That said, final decisions always rest with the property owner or family. Whether you donate, consign, or trash what’s left, we can point you toward local transfer stations, donation centers, or recycling options throughout Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Western Wisconsin.
