Make Your House a Home for the Holidays
The temperature keeps dropping, and the days are getting shorter. If you’re like us, all you want to do is curl up by a fireplace with a warm drink and wait for spring to come. We do have a tip for making the most of these dreary December days, though, and it’s all about holiday cheer!
There’s really nothing like hanging colorful lights and sparkling home decor to bring some brightness to these dark, chilly days! In fact, it’s been scientifically proven that decorating your home for the holidays increases your happiness!
According to Steve McKeown, psychoanalyst, founder of MindFixers and owner of The McKeown Clinic, “In a world full of stress and anxiety people like to associate to things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood. Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement.”
We love bringing our holiday heirlooms out of storage to hang with care, but over the years, we’ve noticed that our treasures have dwindled. Between rough moves, playful toddlers and curious pets, many of our childhood favorites have seen better days. We find ourselves waxing poetic about those bubble lights from Grandma’s house and that funky color projector that Mom used to have.
While the aisles upon aisles of holiday decorations at the store are shiny and new, they just don’t give us that warm pang of nostalgia that we love around this time of year. Luckily, there’s a place where vintage holiday decorations live on, some even preserved in their original packaging. Beautiful aluminum trees are nestled in boxes, and Shiny Brites dangle from carefully bent paper clip hangers.
We bet you know where we’re going with this...
That’s right. Estate sales the best place to find those special pieces that will make your house feel like a home for the holidays!
